Veterinary Internal Medicine and Advanced Diagnostics
When your pet is dealing with a complex or chronic illness, having answers—and a clear plan—matters. At The Pet Hospital of Madison we focus on diagnosing, treating, and managing diseases that affect your pet’s internal systems, using advanced diagnostics and a thoughtful, comprehensive approach to care.
What Is Veterinary Internal Medicine?
Veterinary internal medicine addresses conditions that are often subtle, ongoing, or difficult to diagnose. These cases may involve multiple body systems and require specialized testing and long-term management. Our goal is not just to treat symptoms, but to understand the underlying cause of your pet’s illness and create a plan tailored to their specific needs and lifestyle.
Conditions We Commonly Treat
- Gastrointestinal disorders (chronic vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss)
- Endocrine diseases (diabetes, Cushing’s disease, Addison’s disease, thyroid disorders)
- Liver and gallbladder disease
- Kidney and urinary tract disease
- Respiratory conditions
- Immune-mediated diseases
- Chronic infections
- Fever of unknown origin
- Anemia and other blood disorders
If your pet has symptoms that don’t resolve, keep recurring, or don’t fit a clear diagnosis, an internal medicine evaluation may be the next step.

Advanced Diagnostics
Accurate diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. We offer advanced diagnostic tools and testing, which may include:

Comprehensive Laboratory Testing
Our lab is equipped with the technology to handle a wide variety of sample types and testing needs, including:
- Blood chemistry
- Complete blood count
- Bacterial cultures
- Glucose monitoring
- Pathology
- Urinalysis and culture
- Fungal cultures
- Infectious disease screening
- Intestinal parasite screening
Digital Radiography (Digital X-ray)
With superior image resolution and the ability to enlarge and manipulate the digital images, digital X-rays have proven to be more versatile and efficient than the traditional film X-ray technology. Because the images are sharper and give our veterinarians a greater amount of information, we have to take less images and can provide a faster diagnosis, leading to more immediate treatment and a quicker recovery for pets.
Digital X-rays also take less time to capture and less time to process, which leads to less time that the pet has to spend on the table and ultimately less stress for him or her. Since the images are digital, we are also able to email them to specialists for consultation on challenging cases or directly to the pet owner for his or her own records.
Some of the conditions for which digital imaging is ideal include:
- Cancer screening
- Bone fractures
- Orthopedic conditions
- Reproductive issues
- Heart and lung evaluations
- Gastrointestinal diseases
Ultrasound Imaging
Ultrasound is another non-invasive diagnostic tool that The Pet Hospital of Madison employs. Using ultrasound, we can view the abdomen or chest of an animal and examine the condition and operation of the internal organs in “real time.” Our veterinarians often use the ultrasound to diagnose conditions involving:
- Cardiac (heart) issues
- Unexplained vomiting
- Abnormal urination
- Diarrhea
- Weight loss
- Abnormal kidney or liver blood work
Endoscopy
An endoscope is a small camera and light affixed to the end of a flexible tube. We can use the endoscope to examine the internal linings of the pet’s gastrointestinal system. A tool can also be attached to the endoscope for easy removal of items the pet may have ingested.
Individualized Treatment & Long-Term Care
Many internal medicine conditions require ongoing management rather than a one-time treatment. We work closely with you to develop a realistic care plan that supports your pet’s health and quality of life. This may include medication, dietary therapy, lifestyle adjustments, and regular monitoring.
Communication is a priority—We're here to answer questions, adjust treatment plans as needed, and support you every step of the way. We take time to explain results clearly, so you understand what’s happening and what your options are.
